Molybdenum Alloys and Emerging Applications

Molybdenum is a silvery-white, hard transition metal. Although molybdenum production in the market economies totals on the order of 200 million pounds each year.

Only about 15 million pounds of that total finds its way into applications requiring molybdenum metal or metal alloys.
And yet, these applications form an important part of the worlds industrial activity.

Molybdenum metal is an enabling material in technologies as diverse as glass making, aerospace, and high-performance electronics (Fig. 1).

This article discusses the properties of molybdenum that make it such a useful material, some current applications, and examples of two emerging applications.
