Preparation of TZM alloy by powder metallurgy

There are two methods to produce TZM alloy - arc melting and powder metallurgy.

Arc melting is used to melt molybdenum powder and a certain amount of elements such as Ti and Zr under vacuum or H2 protection, and then use casting or machining to obtain bars or blanks. But powder metallurgy is more effective with lower production cost.

Powder metallurgy processes:

1. Mix high-purity molybdenum powder with TiH2 powder, ZrH2 powder and graphite powder uniformly in proportion.

2. Cold isostatic pressing to form parts.

3. Sintering under protective atmosphere.

4. High temperature forging, high temperature annealing, medium temperature forging, medium temperature annealing and warm forging to obtain finished products.

In order to improve the shaping and processing performance, the TZM alloy bars need to be extruded, forged or rolled. However, residual stress will be generated after that. Therefore, the alloy should be annealed under vacuum or H2 protection.
