【Know Molybdenum】The Main Problems and Influence Factors of Molybdenum Disulfide Coating

Molybdenum disulfide coating (MoS2 coating) is a combination of molybdenum disulfide lubricant and high performance resins. This coating provides effective lubrication in a wide range of loads, in many cases exceeding 250,000 psi, MoS2 coating lubricates sacrificially by transferring lubricant between the two mating surfaces, which helps to reduce wear and coefficient of friction. The main problems and influence factors in the process of coating are as following:

1.0 Sagging

Sagging is the tendency of a wet coating to flow downward due to the force of gravity, which produces a thicker lower edge on the surface being coated. The main factors affecting sagging are the thickness of the coating and the viscosity of the paint:

1.1 The coating is too thick;

1.2 Repeated coating for many times, the coating gun is too close to the workpiece;

1.3 The viscosity of the paint is too low;

1.4 The working temperature is too low and the solvent evaporates too slowly.

2.0 Wrinkles

Wrinkles often emerge on a paint layer when a second coat of paint is applied on an already-coated substrate, which will cause uneven surface of the spring sheet and then increase the assembly gap after being flattened during the working process.

Causes

2.1 Unfavorable drying conditions, such as very high ambient temperature;

2.2 The coating gun is poorly atomized and the particles are too large;

2.3 The coating distance is too close;

2.4 The viscosity is too high;

2.5 Insufficient addition or no addition of drier.

3.0 Particles

3.1 The working environment is dusty;

3.2 The paint is not filtered or filtered improperly;

3.3 Uneven or insufficient mixing.

4.0 Peeling

4.1 Contamination, improper surface preparation;

4.2 Insufficient mixing;

4.3 Placed for too long after drying;

4.3 Improper cure.
