Molybdenum Electrode and Glass Electricity Technology

Used gas, fuel oil or natural gas as fuel for glass manufacturing, its energy utilization rate is only 25% ~ 30%. Besides, the environmental pollution is large and glass has low quality. Further, the labor consumption is large and productivity is low. The glass electricity technology takes advantage of electrical conductivity of vitreum at high temperature molten state, when passing large current can generate heat resistance, so it can use self-generated heat to melt glass. This technology thermal efficiency up to 95%, and non-polluting, can be automated by electronic control.

Electrode is the key material to the glass electricity technology. In the glass melting process, mainly through the electrode pass current to the glass melt. The electrode need to work in the high temperature molten glass for long time, which requires high temperature, good corrosion-resistant, and not pollute and other excellent properties. The most suitable electrode materials are Pt-7Rh, Pt-10Rh and Pt-25Rh, but China's platinum, rhodium and other resources are extremely scarce, and foreign purchases is expensive, so using this material as the electrode material is not realistic.

Molybdenum, having good high temperature properties and good corrosion resistance, can basically meet the requirements of the glass furnace. Besides, it has wide applications range. In addition to lead glass, it can be used to melt most of the glass, such as refractory glass, high viscosity glass, and high volatile glass and so on. In addition, molybdenum will not react with molten glass and does not generate impurity to contaminate the glass. Meanwhile, China is rich in molybdenum resources, compared with platinum and rhodium electrode material, the molybdenum electrode more affordable. Based on the above excellent characteristics, after World War II, molybdenum electrodes have been widely used in the glass industry. Molybdenum electrode outstanding advantages are:

1.Electrode can be infiltrated by molten glass, so the contact resistance is small and the electrode surface can withstand a higher current density, approximately 1 ~ 3A / cm2.
2. Electrode has low heat loss.
3. Electrode won’t easy to color the glass.
