The forging of molybdenum and TZM normally starts with recrystallized billets or bars heated to 2150 to 2400F (1175 to 1315℃), about the maximum operating temperatures for most forge-shop furnaces; these conditions provide for minimum resistance to plastic deformation.
The hot hardness of molybdenum decreases gradually with increasing temperatures in the range of 1200 to 2400F (650 to 1315℃). Although an increase in temperature at the high end of the range does not reduce the flow stress of the metal appreciably, the higher the forging temperature, the longer will be the time during which deformation can be effected by the hammer or press. As forging progresses, increasing strain hardening and reduction in temperature raise the resistance of the metal to further deformation; therefore, greater unit pressures are required to effect a given reduction of area.
Molybdenum and TZM alloy can be deformed at temperatures as low as 1400 F(760℃) if the hammer develops sufficient energy per blow. However, the workpiece is usually returned to the furnace when it reaches the temperature of about 1600 F (870℃).
Reheating accomplishes two purposes:
(a) It raises the temperature back to the level where the hot hardness and flow stress are reduced, and
(b) It serves to reduce the extent of strain hardening by stress relieving or partially recrystallizing the metal.
