Electron beam welding offers several advantages over other welding procedures for joining molybdenum.
The electron beam provides for high energy density with relatively low energy input, therefore fusion welds can be produced with a minimum of grain growth in the heat affected zone and small grains in the fusion zone. The very high vacuum in which the electron guns operate is an ideal environment to prevent contamination from oxygen during welding. Automatic controls afford consistency of operation and readily reproducible results. Electron beam welding has been used to join molybdenum and TZM plates 0.5-12.7 mm thick. Hubs and rims of experimental gas turbine rotors have been welded successfully.
Arc cast unalloyed molybdenum and TZM sheet are preferable for electron beam welding because they have been deoxidized and out-gassed during the original consolidation process.
For the strongest joints the TZM alloy is recommended because the welds will have narrow recrystallized zones and finer grain sizes in the heat affected zone. Autogenous welds usually produce good joints.
