Passive chromium oxide layer near the grain boundaries and in the vicinity of non-metallic inclusions are very sensitive to the formation of micro-batteries and quickly produce pitting. The anoxic zone, such as washers or the lap of a similar corrosion is very sensitive, and it is commonly referred to crevice corrosion.
Molybdenum is to prevent the most cost-effective corrosion and crevice corrosion pitting the most inexpensive alloying elements. Exposure to corrosive media at high temperature, especially corrosive chlorides and sulfides in steel, wherein the applied or if the presence of residual tensile stress, stress corrosion cracking (SCC) will occur. Increased molybdenum content is to increase resistance to stress corrosion cracking of steel one of the most effective method.
The figure shows a 56-year exposure to 304 (excluding MO) and 316 in the North Atlantic on LaQue of Corrosion Services marine atmospheric test equipment (including 3% ~ 4% Mo) test board. 316 is not corrosive, maintaining excellent state over half a century in a very harsh environment. Contain molybdenum stainless steel was severely corroded. This photo vividly reflects the added molybdenum stainless beneficial effects.
Scrubber power plants operating in extremely harsh operating environment, pulp and paper and chemical processing equipment requires the use of very high molybdenum alloy containing. Very high molybdenum-containing alloy including typical 6% ~ 8% Mo alloys containing 10% ~ 16% Mo nickel based alloys.
